Whether you are a community organizer, block captain, a neighbor who wants to address a specific issue or just plain care about what happens, we want you to get involved in improving the quality of life for our community. Philly Spring Cleanup. Every year, City government, residents, and organizations partner to kick off the spring season by cleaning and beautifying Philadelphia’s neighborhoods through the Philly Spring Cleanup. This Office of Clean and Green Initiatives event takes place at hundreds of locations across the city. Residents and organizations can register as volunteers or submit projects, including park and neighborhood cleanups. Philly Spring Cleanup is Philadelphia’s largest city-wide, single-day clean-up event. Since its 2008 launch, a total of 200,000 volunteers have removed more than 11.4 million pounds of trash and 950,000 pounds of tires from city streets at nearly 6,750 project sites.

Since 2011, OWN has participated in the Philly Spring Cleanup. Each spring, we collaborate with our concerned neighbors and block captains to clean up our Overbrook community. In order to make the process easier for our block captains and concerned neighbors, we organize neighborhood activities. We create and provide flyers, we rent a UHaul truck to pick up and distribute cleaning supplies and we coordinate all trash pick up locations. A Celebration of Overbrook Leadership. In 2023, we hosted this special event as our way of recognizing our concerned neighbors who stepped up to look out for each other during COVID-19. Overbrook, Wynnefield and our surrounding West Philadelphia communities were especially hard hit during this global pandemic. With the generous support of a local business owner who provided us with equipment and space at no cost, and a weekly delivery of fresh produce and food from the USDA Farmers to Families Program, we organized distribution of 500 food boxes over a 65 week period valued at more than $1Million.

City of Philadelphia Streets Department Philadelphia More Beautiful Campaign Best Block Contest. Held at the end of each cleaning season to recognize hardworking, dedicated volunteers. Existing block captains act as judges by visiting each contest block and evaluating them on organization, cleanliness, improvements, and participation. The winning blocks are announced at a gala Clean Block Banquet in November. Each participating block receives a cash reward.
